Hi Subscriber,
Recently, I had the opportunity to host a painting workshop in my home. I have some experience teaching kids but not as much with adults. When I was originally asked, visions of the workshops I attended came crashing in. Would I be able to inspire my students to dive in? Throw caution to the wind? To let go of the 'I can't even draw a stick figure'?
Summer is crammed with events and obligations for all so when 8 eager artists showed up at my door, I was pleasantly surprised. I met, that night, some of the kindest, most patient individuals I've ever worked with.
Acrylic paint was squirted out. Painting Medium was scooped. I was very up front, explaining to each student, my limited experience hosting these workshops. We walked through step by step together the creation of nine travel sized paintings of ice cream sundaes. Artists would stop, hold up their paintings for a better view. Some just stopped. Some mixed and mixed. One painting was thick with texture, another had actual sprinkles added into the paint. Artists were full of blue, green, and pink by the night's end. Even more full of support for each other. Laughter and words of encouragement were in the air. I was truly impressed.
That night, after the brushes were washed, I remembered, we all learn most by teaching. I learned that night about kindness, acceptance, mutual support, and appreciating limits.
Peace,
Leslie
